How should a mediator respond when one party makes a statement they experience as a biased comment? If you are selected as mediator based on one of your visible identities, how might you “counteract” the impression that you might be more empathetic to the side that shares your identity? What should a mediator say, if anything, when a party makes a statement that assumes you share their stereotypical thinking? BLC’s Audrey Lee will share brief remarks at the beginning of the hour and facilitate a brainstorming discussion on how to address these challenging moments in mediation. Prior to the session, participants will be invited to share scenarios and topics of interest in a pre-program anonymous e-survey.
