SUMMARY:The Internal Family Systems Model for Lawyers and Mediators
DESCRIPTION:Register here\nA gathering for lawyers and mediators to explore how Internal Family Systems (IFS) can enhance their practice and personal growth. \nThe Internal Family Systems model\, used by mental health professionals and coaches\, is also useful for lawyers\, mediators\, and others involved in conflict resolution. Developed by psychologist Richard Schwartz\, the IFS model helps clients and practitioners identify our various “parts\,” understand how they interact\, and promote access to our core of “Self” energy\, which operates as a source of healing and wisdom within each of our operating systems. Please join this quarterly gathering of lawyers and mediators who use the IFS model\, or are just beginning to learn about it\, to share ideas\, experiences\, and resources. Attendance is via Zoom and free. Please register with your preferred email address as we will send the zoom link for this program to registered email addresses the week before the workshop. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Managing the Negotiation Within: Internal Family Systems Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Managing the Negotiation Within: An Internal Family Systems Workshop for Mediators\, Lawyers and Other Professionals who deal with conflict.\n\n\nBoston Law Collaborative and Relationship Conflict Resolution invite you to a training led by mediator and attorney David Hoffman\, Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School \nWhen embattled parties negotiate\, they are often awash in emotions and impulses that make for difficult interactions and impasses. The Internal Family Systems model (IFS) provides a language and framework for helping each party to identify and speak for the fearful\, enraged\, or wounded parts of themselves that are driving the conflict\, and to feel witnessed by the other. In addition\, IFS offers lawyers\, mediators\, and other professionals clear and practical ways to work with their own emotions and create an environment in which clients feel safe to be less defensive. \nThis program will provide participants with an in-depth opportunity to learn and work with the IFS model in the conflict resolution setting. No prior IFS training is needed. \nFor more information about the program and for payment options\, please click here

SUMMARY:Addressing Bias and Stereotypes in Mediation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual workshop\n\n\nHow should a mediator respond when one party makes a statement they experience as a biased comment? If you are selected as mediator based on one of your visible identities\, how might you “counteract” the impression that you might be more empathetic to the side that shares your identity? What should a mediator say\, if anything\, when a party makes a statement that assumes you share their stereotypical thinking? BLC’s Audrey Lee will share brief remarks at the beginning of the hour and facilitate a brainstorming discussion on how to address these challenging moments in mediation. Prior to the session\, participants will be invited to share scenarios and topics of interest in a pre-program anonymous e-survey. The zoom link will be emailed to registrants the week of the workshop. Please register with the same email address you would like to be used to receive any zoom/workshop information. Thank you!

SUMMARY:Addressing Bias and Stereotyping in Mediations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this free virtual workshop on addressing bias and stereotypes in mediations\n\n\nUsing mediation scenarios\, Audrey Lee will lead a discussion of when and how mediators may address bias and stereotypes in the mediation process. Is the choice to address a biased comment an individual one for the mediator or do mediators have a heightened obligation to do so in order to create a space for all involved to participate fully? When might the “intervening” mediator appear to or actually lose their neutrality vis-à-vis the mediation participants? Please bring your ideas\, questions and experiences to contribute to the discussion. SUMMARY:Thinking About Ombuds Work? Ask the Ombuds!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free virtual workshop on the role of ombuds.\n\n\nIn the last few years\, more organizations and institutions have looked to bring an ombuds resource in-house. While mediators have many of the skills needed by ombuds\, there are some important distinctions in roles. Join us for an informal conversation with mediator-turned-ombuds Esther Lin (Brandeis University) and Marcus Stergio (Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs). Currently serving in their first ombuds roles\, Esther and Marcus can speak to the transition from mediating to serving as ombuds and share advice for aspiring ombuds. Newly trained ombuds Audrey Lee will facilitate Q&A – bring your questions! (Registrants will recieve an email reminder with the zoom link the day before the program – emails will go to the email address that was used to register).

SUMMARY:Should Mediators Draft Agreements? - The Impact of the Reid v Kroll Case
DESCRIPTION:Join BLC’s David Hoffman in a free virtual event to discuss the impact of the recent Reid versus Kroll case.\n\n\nIn this free brown-bag Zoom lunch gathering (facilitated by BLC’s David Hoffman)\, we will consider what changes\, if any\, mediators should make in the wake of the recent decision in Reid v. Kroll. Some mediators who previously drafted agreements are now doing so only if the parties have counsel. What does that mean for mediation parties who can’t afford counsel? Some mediators have decided that they will draft only bullet-point memos when a case settles\, but where does that leave the parties on issues that a more complex draft addresses? Please bring your perspectives\, questions\, comments\, and practice tips!!
